Vanillekipferl is a traditional Christmas cookie originating in Austria, although it has become a popular holiday sweet in Germany, Czech, Slovakia, and Hungary. Children love to help make these delicious cookies, shaping the dough into little moons. As the story goes, way back in history, the Austro-Hungarian Empire repelled an invasion from the Ottoman Turks, partly thanks to bakers in Vienna who first raised the alarm. The bakers celebrated by creating these little cookies, shaped into crescents to symbolize the Turkish flag.
The Wiener Schnitzel is the national dish of Austria and is also a popular German dish. It's a very thin pork cutlet that is breaded and deep fried and garnished with a wedge of lemon. It is traditionally served with kopfsalat (lettuce, onions and sweet vinegar dressing) potato salad, cucumber salad or spaetzle (noodles). Today it is also served with pomme frits (french fries). The word 'wiener' means 'from Vienna' and 'schnitz' means to slice or cut. So here we have a cutlet of pork from Vienna.
