Tübingen ~ Germany

Highlights:

Cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways, steep steps and a colorful blend of half-timbered homes with their pointed gables are what shape the silhouette of Old Tübingen.  This ‘Swabian University City’ dates back to the Middle-Ages and today boasts of a beautiful restored medieval center, old church and castle.  Blending the old in with the new, it’s a typical atmosphere of a young and cosmopolitan students' town.

When we lived in a small German village just outside Herrenberg, we were only about 15 minutes away from the University town of Tübingen.  It’s the perfect place to relax as you stroll past sidewalk cafes and wine taverns, enjoy the market and browse through the cozy little shops.  You can also enjoy a boat ride, punting along the Neckar River which offers a charming view of the surrounding city and is the perfect way to unwind.

Last time I was visiting Germany I stayed with some friends in Stuttgart and took the train into Tübingen for the day! I still have wonderful memories of this place that I’ll always treasure.

Treasured Memories:

-Amazing scenic town with half-timbered houses everywhere

-The hunt for a bathroom

-Shopping again, we fell in love with their lace scarves and we found a bathroom

-Eating at a bakery for lunch

-Meandering down little narrow streets

-Stumbling upon a lovely old church full of history

-Feeling like a tourist with my camera around my neck

-Watching locals shop at the market

-Eating ice cream on a bench in a cobbled stone street while listening to the church bells ringing

Highlights:

-The walk from the train station into Tübingen was a delight as we crossed a bridge to get to the main town center; we could see what we were heading towards before we even entered the place. A very picturesque town.

-The gray skies seemed to promise us some heavy rain but we lucked out, it cleared up as the day went on. It ended up being a beautiful day as I snapped away with my camera. I got some funny looks with my camera; guess they weren’t use to tourists.

-Our day was filled with walking through alleyways and finding fun little shops, we especially loved the shop that sold European lace scarves. We were also very thankful for the shop keeper to let us use her bathroom. We couldn’t find a public bathroom anywhere in this town.  I bought numerous scarves from this little shop for me and my daughters; I just love European scarves, lace and linen.  It’s quite a weakness of mine and so easy to pack or mail home. This is the street with the little shop selling scarves.  If you look closely enough, to the right you will see a stand full of scarves.

-There’s nothing like eating ice cream on a nice sunny day and watching the world go by. It was all locals here. I think we were the only tourists. It was interesting to see how laid back people were, a very slow pace of life they lived, and I loved it. They would stop for ice cream, eat long lunches, chat with friends in the street, meander through the market or just sit on steps in the main square and relax; what a life!  Notice we had cloudy gray skies in the morning, look at the perfect blue sky by the afternoon. Only in Europe! What a beautiful day!
